Family Movie Night {Review & Recipe #iLovemyK9}

I love family nights where my husband, Pee Wee and I can just relax and all watch something entertaining. It’s what I need after a long day at work, and it helps me spend time with my little “zoo” at home. I say zoo because sometimes it looks like a zoo in my house. Stuff all over the counters, Pee Wee’s hair everywhere and my husband’s socks strewn around the floor.

Oh boy.

Well, we decided to have a family movie night with healthy treats we could all enjoy and a heartwarming movie about animals. Now, I will preface this by saying I did cry during the movie. If there are animals, you can bet I will cry. I cry during most shows, it’s just how I roll.

As usual, we headed out to Walmart to stock up on things we needed for our family movie night. Pee Wee chose “We Bought a Zoo”. I think he chose it because Matt Damon has an infectious smile, but it’s probably the whole zoo animals thing, right? Could be the smile…whatever.

We chose to have a healthy snack as opposed to our usual fare of chips, dip and soda. I had seen Del Monte fruit cups advertised in Woman’s World and Parade magazine (with a 50-cent coupon being found in First for Women magazine…fist pump!) so I decided to make a low calorie peach cobbler using their cinnamon sugar peaches.

With some simple ingredients, I whipped up a 130 calorie peach cobbler-esque snack for Daniel and I to munch on during the movie.

I took some simple ramekins and filled the bottom with about 2 tbsp of Cool Whip + a dash of cinnamon.

Then I topped each with a Del Monte cinnamon sugar peach cup (strained) and added a pinch of cinnamon sugar pita chips on top for some crunch.

And of course, we can’t forget about Pee Wee, so we bought him some Milk-Bone treats while at Walmart. He particularly loves the chicken flavor, so I put together a little pet treats/snack bowl for him as well. I know, we treat him like he’s a person, but to us he means the world. <3

Now, it’s time to watch the movie!

And here’s Pee Wee working hard for his dog treats:

And finally we get him to settle down to enjoy the movie.

“You’re putting this on your blog, aren’t you?”

Yup, I sure am.

It’s fun to organize family time and include your pets, because hey, they’re family, too. And if you want to save money on pet treats or dog food + purchase the We Bought a Zoo DVD, check out specially marked packages of Milk-Bone, Milo’s Treats and Kibbles n’Bits products for a $4.00 off coupon. Your pets and wallet will thank you.

Also, I highly recommend We Bought a Zoo as a family friendly, heart warming movie. And it’s even based on a true-story, but honestly it’s a great way to spend an evening with those you love. Even the furry ones.

What sort of activities do you include your pets in? I’d love some ideas since we’re getting to the time of the year where the weather is lovely and energy is aplenty to seize the day and live life. :)
