Fall Themed Address Wreath {DIY Tutorial}

I’m honestly surprised my husband tolerates my weird home  décor obsessions. And trust me, there have been tons.

There was the floral phase, followed by the damask phase (which is still on going), followed by the stripes phase and now I’m in a hodge podge phase where I happen to really love all things peacock colored/themed.

Poor guy.

Today I’m sharing my peacock-ish, fall address wreath.

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

Supplies:

-Wreath (I snagged this one for about $3 at JoAnn’s)

-Ribbon (my peacock ribbon is from Hobby Lobby’s Christmas section…which is already up and stocked. Not that I was just there 2 weeks ago…)

-Floral accents (I have 2 bunches from Dollar Tree + 1 accent piece from Hobby Lobby)

-House/Address numbers

-Spray paint (if you wish to paint your house numbers)

-Hot glue, floral wire, etc to adhere the above items to your wreath

Total Cost: About $10+ depending on what you have on hand.

I do want to be totally upfront with something though- I do not make these wreaths in a permanent way. Meaning that I don’t hot glue the stuff to my wreath because this way, at the end of the season/holiday, I simply remove all the components and store them. This saves me money and I have an almost endless pool of craft stuff to use for these projects. Also, my tastes change and I have limited storage space (meaning I don’t want to store 10 different wreaths), so this is what works for me. If you’re not as cheap/thrifty/pressed for space, feel free to hot glue to your heart’s content. I tend to use floral wire, string and Glue Dots to hold stuff in place.

First step was to cut all the flowers down to have 2-3” stems (save the leaves in case you need/want filler stuff):

After I got that done (took me about 5 minutes), I went outside to spray paint my house numbers. They’re the cheap plastic ones from Lowe’s that are about $1 each. I used Rustoleum’s Lagoon paint because I wanted a peacock blue color. I used the satin finish for this project.

Let that dry for about an hour, and you can keep on working on your wreath. Since I did not hot glue the flowers to the wreath, I had to strip the plastic off the stem to expose the floral wire in the stem. I used that to wrap around the wreath branches for a secure fit. I just used a cable stripper to get the plastic off, but sometimes it’ll peel right off if you snip the edge a bit. I knew I wanted all the flowers on the left side, so I arranged them as such leaving room for my bow.

I played around with the arrangement some more to make it more even. Then I whipped out my secret weapon…

My bowdabra!! I love this thing. It helps me make bows in minutes. I used this video here to help me lay out my ribbon in the proper way. I think I paid about $10 for the bowdabra at JoAnn’s, and it’s been worth every penny.

Kinda looks like angry eyes, right? I think so. Ggrr.

I make sure my loops were relatively even on both sides.

And then I placed my bow between the flowers and fluffed it out a bit. It’s fastened to the wreath using floral wire. I wanted a few touches of orange to make it look more “fall” inspired, plus my house numbers and a black bird from Dollar Tree.

And then I had myself a super cute, inexpensive wreath:

Looking at it, I think I am going to add more flowers once I have time to go buy some more from Dollar Tree- maybe another bunch or 2. But for now, it’s cute, personalized and I like it. Plus it took me about an hour total, and that’s because I took a few Twitter breaks. Oh, and it’s definitely not just floating on the door- it’s being held in place using one of the free Command hooks (click here for coupons!) I got at BlogHer.

What do you think? Have you made a fall wreath lately or plan to make one?

I’ll be back on Monday with another fall/Halloween themed project involving pumpkins from Dollar Tree:
